Young Innovator Aims to Combat Skin Cancer with Affordable Soap

A young scientist is on a mission to develop an affordable soap designed to treat skin cancer, addressing a significant health issue that often comes with high treatment costs. Initially unaware of the severity of skin cancer, the innovator became increasingly aware of its impact as they grew older. This realization sparked a desire to create a solution that could be accessible to everyone, leading to the development of a unique soap from home. The soap, named Melanoma Treating Soap (MTS), is a compound-based bar infused with various cancer-fighting chemicals. It incorporates a drug typically used for antifungal and acne treatments, which has recently gained attention for its potential in skin cancer therapy. The soap's formulation includes lipid-based nanoparticles, allowing the medicinal properties to remain on the skin even after washing, although the creator emphasizes cautious use, as they do not have skin cancer themselves. Looking ahead, the young innovator plans to transform this project into a nonprofit organization by 2028, aiming to provide equitable access to skin cancer treatments for those in need. The overarching goal is to ensure that effective treatment options are available to as many individuals as possible, reflecting a deep commitment to public health. In recognition of their efforts, the innovator recently received a $25,000 prize, which they intend to partially allocate towards college expenses while also furthering their mission to combat skin cancer through innovative solutions.
