Groves Road Closure Sparks Concerns Over Flood Management
- Groves Road in Douglas is closed for three months to enhance drainage.
- The works aim to prevent flooding, which historically affected the National Sports Centre.
- The construction includes new gullies and better bus accessibility, easing transport in the area.
A section of Groves Road in Douglas will be closed for three months to improve drainage systems aimed at mitigating flooding risks. The project comes as a response to past flooding issues that notably affected the National Sports Centre during heavy rainfall in April and December 2015. The Department of Infrastructure initiated these works in collaboration with Paul Carey and Sons, focusing on the installation of new gullies and road resurfacing. Additionally, the improvements will include more accessible bus curbs and refurbished road crossings. While access to local businesses will be maintained, bus routes serving the area will experience diversions to accommodate ongoing construction. These infrastructure upgrades are necessary to ensure that the drainage is capable of handling extreme weather events that could lead to further flooding incidents in the future.
