4G mobile broadband boosts productivity and safety in Outer Hebrides
- The Outer Hebrides will receive 4G mobile broadband coverage via a new mast on South Uist.
- The mast will connect several villages and improve service for those working at sea.
- This coverage is expected to enhance local business productivity and safety in remote areas.
The Outer Hebrides region is set to receive 4G mobile broadband coverage for the first time due to the Shared Rural Network programme. A newly constructed mast on South Uist will enhance connectivity in various localities, including Balivanich, Grimsay, Liniclate, and most of Benbecula. Additionally, this advancement is expected to benefit those working at sea in The Little Minch area. Virgin Media O2 has undertaken the construction of the mast, which will provide network coverage for all telecom operators, not just their own. Chris Bryant, the UK telecoms minister, expressed optimism that this development will significantly improve productivity for local businesses and enhance safety for residents in these remote areas.
