Aims Community College expands aviation program with $19.5 million hangar

Aims Community College is enhancing its aviation program by investing in a new $19.5 million hangar at the Loveland Fort Collins airport campus. This expansion includes the introduction of an on-site aviation mechanic program, which aims to improve the training of pilots and address potential bottlenecks in the aviation industry. The college previously operated at the Greeley Airport in Weld County, but the move to a commercial airport offers better access to resources and companies in the aviation sector. The new hangar, often referred to as the "Taj Mahal of hangars," features various amenities such as gathering spaces, observation decks, and office areas. The college plans to redesign parts of the hangar to create classroom space, which will facilitate in-house maintenance for their aircraft. This development is expected to enhance the operational efficiency of the program, ensuring that planes remain in service and available for training. Senator John Hickenlooper visited the facilities to emphasize the importance of training more pilots to meet industry demands. Despite some local residents expressing concerns about the relocation and expansion in Larimer County, the college maintains that it serves both Weld and Larimer counties. The funding for the college comes from taxpayers in Weld County, which has led to discussions among local commissioners regarding the allocation of resources.
