PARIS – A ransomware attack has compromised the central data systems of the Grand Palais and several other museums within the Réunion des Musées Nationaux network, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. The attack, which was detected on Sunday, has affected data systems utilized by approximately 40 museums across France, raising concerns as some venues are set to host events for the upcoming Summer Olympics. Despite the breach, Paris authorities and the Grand Palais-RMN network have assured the public that there has been no disruption to Olympic events. The Grand Palais is scheduled to host fencing and taekwondo competitions, while the Château de Versailles will serve as the venue for equestrian sports and the modern pentathlon. The organization stated that “to date, no data extraction has been detected,” indicating that sensitive information may not have been compromised. In response to the incident, the Grand Palais-RMN has mobilized its technical teams to address the situation and restore affected systems as efficiently as possible. The Paris prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation, assigning the case to the Brigade for Combating Cybercrime to ascertain the extent of the attack and identify those responsible. Authorities are actively working to secure the compromised systems while ensuring that preparations for the Olympic events continue without interruption. The incident highlights the growing threat of cyberattacks on cultural institutions, particularly during significant global events.
