Missed Diagnosis Claims Life of 11-Year-Old Lacey Brookman
- Lacey Brookman showed unusual symptoms for appendicitis which went undiagnosed.
- After two weeks, an ultrasound finally confirmed her condition.
- An inquest revealed missed opportunities for proper diagnosis and called for improved training and access to ultrasound services.
Lacey Brookman, an 11-year-old schoolgirl from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, fell ill in April 2021, presenting symptoms that were atypical for appendicitis. Despite multiple consultations and examinations by four doctors, her condition was overlooked until an ultrasound finally revealed that her appendix had burst. Following surgery, she experienced severe complications leading to multi-organ failure, ultimately resulting in her passing at King's College Hospital on June 4, 2021. The inquest highlighted a lack of awareness among medical professionals regarding this particular type of appendicitis, prompting calls for improved training and access to diagnostic services. Recommendations for better availability of ultrasound scanning, especially after hours, have also been made based on the findings.
