Affrilachia Summit Celebrates Black Arts in Appalachia, Oct 1-2, 2024

The Gateway Regional Arts Center in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, is set to host a significant event on October 1-2, 2024, aimed at celebrating Black arts, culture, and history in the Appalachian region. This inaugural Affrilachia Summit will gather influential figures from the Affrilachian arts movement, providing a platform for discussions on the historical and contemporary contributions of Black artists in Appalachia. The event will feature prominent artists, including Frank X Walker, who coined the term 'Affrilachia,' and Martha Redbone, known for her unique musical fusion. In addition to performances, the Summit will include panels and workshops designed to foster critical conversations about the evolving landscape of Black creativity. Malcolm Davis will present a site-specific piece honoring Monk Estill, the first freed slave in Kentucky, while Marie T. Cochran will share insights from the Affrilachian Artists Project. This gathering aims to highlight the rich cultural heritage and ongoing contributions of Black artists in the region. Jordan Campbell, the Executive Director of GRAC, expressed enthusiasm for the event, emphasizing its importance in promoting inclusivity and recognizing the significant impact of Black artists on Appalachian culture. The Summit is supported by various organizations and private donors, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging experience for attendees.
