PARIS—The Taiwan Pavilion at the Cultural Olympiad in Paris wrapped up its 15-day exhibition on August 10, celebrating the remarkable achievements of Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, who recently won a gold medal. The event featured a vibrant display of Taiwan's cultural richness, with 24 performing arts groups and over 120 participants showcasing the island's commitment to "freedom, democracy, and diversity" through various artistic expressions, including music, opera, and dance. Emotions ran high during the closing ceremony, particularly for Nymphia Wind, a Taiwanese drag queen and winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, who was visibly moved as Lin's accomplishments were highlighted on an LED screen. The pavilion served as a platform for Taiwan to express its cultural identity and resilience, despite the challenges posed by international politics, particularly the pressure to compete under the name "Chinese Taipei" due to China's influence. Deputy Minister of Culture Sue Wang addressed the audience, reflecting on the pavilion's journey filled with "surprise, tears, joy, friendship, gratitude, pride, and affection." She reiterated Taiwan's determination to engage with the global community and celebrate its unique cultural heritage. François Wu, Taiwan’s representative in France, also expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the pavilion's success, emphasizing that the event was not a farewell but a promise of future connections. The Taiwan Pavilion's closing marked a significant moment for the island's cultural spirit and international presence.
