Trevor Story Nears Return to Red Sox After Shoulder Surgery

— Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story is nearing a return to the field following what was initially deemed a season-ending shoulder surgery. The injury occurred on April 5 while attempting a diving stop against the Los Angeles Angels. Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced that Story will participate in live batting practice on Monday at Fenway Park, marking a significant step in his recovery process. Cora noted that Story has been actively taking infield practice, and during a recent trip to Colorado, it became apparent that a return this season was a possibility. Although the expected recovery time for his shoulder injury is six months, Cora emphasized the importance of not rushing Story back into action. He expressed confidence in Story's defensive readiness, stating that he could handle nine innings if needed. The final hurdle for Story involves refining his batting skills. Cora mentioned that Story has been focusing on building strength and increasing his batting repetitions to prepare for the different pitches he will face. The manager's optimism was evident when he remarked on the progress Story has made, particularly in his hitting drills, which include tee work and soft toss. Before his injury, Story had a batting average of .226 with four RBIs over eight games. Last season, he played only 43 games after undergoing surgery in January to repair a torn UCL, delaying his debut until August 8.
