Cornwall lifesavers aid in rescue during Northampton floods

On November 25, 2024, a significant flooding event struck Northamptonshire, England, as a result of Storm Bert, which unleashed torrential rain, leading to severe consequences and widespread evacuations. The flooding particularly impacted the Billing Aquadrome Holiday Park, where numerous visitors and residents found themselves stranded due to rising water levels in the nearby lakes. In response to the urgency of the situation and the looming threat to life, a specialized team from Cornwall's Surf Life Saving clubs was mobilized to assist in the rescue efforts. This decision was driven by the recognition that their unique skills would be critical in addressing the challenges posed by the flood. Four trained surf lifesavers arrived on site and worked tirelessly throughout the night using an inflatable boat to search for any individuals left behind in flooded caravans. They took over from the West Midlands fire brigade, who had successfully evacuated many people earlier but left behind the possibility that some might still be stranded. The team's chairman, Nigel Bowden, conveyed the gravity of the situation, expressing that around 300 lives were at risk. Fortunately, after an exhaustive sweep of the area, they found no additional individuals in need of rescue, emphasizing the efficacy of the previous evacuations and their readiness to respond to such critical situations.
