Naked viewing event held at Dorset Museum

On a Tuesday evening, Dorset Museum in Dorchester hosted a unique event allowing naturists to explore its galleries in the nude. This private viewing attracted 65 attendees, organized by British Naturism, who enjoyed a glass of wine and had access to changing facilities and lockers for their clothes. The museum's director, Claire Dixon, emphasized the event's role in demonstrating how museums can cater to diverse community interests. The initiative emerged as a response to the museum's struggles with visitor numbers and funding, exacerbated by factors such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the cost of living crisis. Dixon had previously called for innovative ideas to attract visitors, leading to a positive response from the community. The event was seen as a way to engage with a niche audience while promoting the museum's offerings. Fiona Discombe, an attendee, expressed enthusiasm for the event's uniqueness and the opportunity to share the experience with like-minded individuals. Keith Bowman from the Dorset branch of British Naturism noted the success in ticket sales, which exceeded expectations, highlighting the growing interest in such unconventional events. The museum, which underwent a significant £16.4 million renovation and reopened in 2021, features collections that include the history of palaeontologist Mary Anning and works by notable artists. This event not only showcased the museum's adaptability but also reinforced its commitment to being a welcoming space for all community members.
