Nigerian police and security agencies are actively working to secure the release of 20 medical students kidnapped in Benue State while en route to an annual convention. The abduction occurred on Thursday evening, with the students traveling to Enugu when they were taken. The Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students confirmed the incident, stating that the group included students from two universities and a doctor. Reports indicate that a ransom demand has been made for their release. The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) expressed deep concern for the safety of the abducted students, highlighting that 12 are from the University of Jos and eight from the University of Maiduguri. One student managed to communicate their location, revealing they were held in the Oglewu Ehaje area of Benue State. NMA Secretary-General Benjamin Egbo emphasized the urgency of swift action to ensure the students' safe return. Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has directed local security agencies to intensify efforts for the students' release. The national police have also announced the deployment of advanced helicopters, drones, and specialized tactical vehicles to aid in the search. The kidnapping occurred near Otukpo, an area known for frequent attacks and abductions. Kidnapping incidents in Nigeria have surged amid a worsening economic crisis, prompting many to resort to crime. Despite a 2022 law banning ransom payments, families often feel compelled to pay. A consultancy firm reported nearly 4,800 kidnapping cases in Nigeria since May 2023, underscoring the escalating crisis.
