Amazon and Flipkart face antitrust violations in India

An investigation by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has revealed that Amazon and Flipkart, both major players in the Indian e-commerce market, engaged in anti-competitive practices. The probe, initiated in 2020 following complaints from a group of physical store owners, found that these companies favored certain vendors, allowing them to secure better visibility in search results. This preferential treatment disadvantaged ordinary sellers, who were relegated to mere database entries without the same opportunities for exposure. The inquiry specifically highlighted practices in the mobile phone sector, where favored sellers enjoyed significant advantages, including preferential listings and substantial price reductions. Despite the findings, Amazon has chosen not to comment on the situation, while Flipkart and Amazon India continue to dominate the e-commerce sector, which generated sales of approximately $50 billion to $60 billion last year.
