Pembrokeshire to Host UK Space Radar

The Ministry of Defence has announced plans to redevelop Cawdor Barracks in Pembrokeshire into a hub for a new deep space radar programme. This initiative, known as the Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC), aims to enhance the detection, tracking, and identification of objects in deep space, extending up to 36,000 kilometers from Earth. The project is expected to secure long-term employment for up to 100 personnel at the site, which was previously slated for closure by 2028. Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of the redevelopment, stating it would not only preserve jobs but also bolster the UK's defence capabilities. He noted that the radar system would improve awareness of deep space and protect vital space assets in collaboration with allied nations, including Australia and the US. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the operational readiness of the UK's land, air, and maritime forces. Wales Secretary Jo Stevens highlighted the significance of the project for both the local community and the nation, expressing the UK government's commitment to ensuring its success. The redevelopment is seen as a vital step in maintaining the barracks' operational status while contributing to national security. To engage with the local community, representatives from the DARC programme will be present to address questions and gather feedback from residents, fostering a collaborative approach to the project's implementation.
