- Partnership highlighted in the 2023 JCCA Meetings on Federal Climate Policy.
- Significant progress made in incorporating First Nations in climate initiatives.
The sixth annual report from the First Nations-Canada Joint Committee on Climate Action (JCCA), released today, highlights significant progress in the partnership between First Nations and the Canadian government in addressing climate change. The report reflects on collaborative efforts made in 2023 to enhance First Nations’ leadership in climate initiatives while acknowledging ongoing challenges that require further attention. Since its establishment in 2017, the JCCA has been instrumental in influencing federal climate policy through the active involvement of First Nations. The 2023 meetings provided a vital platform for discussing pressing issues, particularly in light of the severe environmental impacts experienced this year, including floods and wildfires that disproportionately affected First Nations communities. Key topics included the implementation of Canada’s National Adaptation Strategy and the federal government’s commitment to best practices established by the JCCA. The report notes positive strides in integrating First Nations’ perspectives into federal climate initiatives and advancing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. Looking ahead to 2024, the JCCA has outlined five key priorities aimed at enhancing First Nations climate leadership and improving transparency in federal climate funding outcomes. Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault emphasized the unique position of First Nations in leading climate solutions, supported by AFN Yukon Regional Chief Kluane Adamek, who stressed the importance of translating discussions into tangible impacts. As Canada confronts escalating climate challenges, the partnership between First Nations and the federal government is essential for fostering a resilient and sustainable future for all Canadians.
