Story

A former head track and field coach at Lake Oswego High School has initiated a lawsuit against the school district, alleging wrongful termination in violation of his free speech rights. The coach, Parks, claims he was dismissed for advocating changes to state regulations that permit transgender athletes to compete in accordance with their gender identity. His termination followed a letter he sent to the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) on May 15, where he expressed concerns that allowing transgender women and girls to compete could undermine the integrity of female athletics. In his correspondence, Parks proposed the establishment of an open category for transgender athletes, emphasizing his support for transgender students in educational contexts but opposing their participation in athletics due to perceived physical advantages. Following his termination notice on June 12, which cited violations of non-discrimination and harassment policies, Parks filed an appeal and subsequently a lawsuit on July 24 in U.S. Federal Court in Portland. Parks' attorney, Buck Dougherty, characterized the case as a classic example of First Amendment retaliation, arguing that Parks was attempting to propose a solution based on his extensive experience in coaching. Dougherty noted Parks' compassion for the transgender community, highlighting his personal connections to individuals within that community. As of now, the Lake Oswego School District has not publicly commented on the lawsuit or the circumstances surrounding Parks' termination, despite attempts by KATU to reach out for a statement.
