In response to the positive feedback from devotees regarding eco-friendly immersions during last year's Ganesh Utsav, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has decided to increase the number of artificial ponds for idol immersions from two to four. The selected locations for these ponds include Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium, Late Anand Dighe Ground, Joggers Park, and Shivar Garden, with each pond costing approximately Rs 5 lakh to construct. Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Katkar has indicated that there are plans to add two more artificial ponds, bringing the total to six. This initiative aims to raise awareness among devotees about the importance of eco-friendly immersions, which are essential for reducing pollution in natural water bodies. Last year, the civic administration recorded 2,127 immersions on Anant Chaturdashi, with a total of 20,144 Ganesh idols during the 10-day festival, reflecting a 10% annual increase. The two artificial ponds saw over 1,747 immersions, demonstrating a growing acceptance of environmentally friendly practices among the community. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has also stressed the need for measures that promote environmentally conscious celebrations. The upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festivities will commence on September 7, with the final immersion day scheduled for September 17, highlighting the urgency of implementing these eco-friendly initiatives in time for the celebrations.
