In Italy, Viking has expanded its ocean cruise fleet by introducing the Viking Vela, which was presented at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Ancona. This vessel, measuring 784 feet, is designed to accommodate 998 passengers in its 499 cabins, showcasing a larger capacity compared to its sister ships that can host 930 guests. The addition of Viking Vela brings the total number of Viking ocean ships to 13. These ships are characterized by their Scandinavian design and light-filled suites, creating an inviting atmosphere for travelers seeking exploration and comfort. Viking Vela is part of an ambitious plan, as the cruise line is collaborating with Fincantieri to construct a total of 26 new ships in the coming years to meet the demand for luxury cruises. The Viking cruise line is not only focused on innovation but also on sustainability. It has announced plans to develop a partial hybrid propulsion system for future vessels, which would enable operations at zero emissions in sensitive environments, such as the Norwegian Fjords. Although Viking Vela uses a traditional propulsion system, it is designed to be hydrogen-ready, allowing for retrofitting as technology advances. Viking Vela is set to embark on its inaugural sailing season covering itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Fares for these journeys begin at £2,495 per person, making it accessible for a range of travelers eager to explore new destinations. Following the naming ceremony, Torstein Hagen, the chairman of Viking, expressed his enthusiasm for introducing more curious travelers to the brand’s unique approach to exploration, highlighting the elegant design and intimate experience that small ships like Viking Vela offer. Additionally, the company continues to grow its river cruise segment, recently naming two new identical 82-guest vessels, Viking Hathor and Viking Sobek, to sail the Nile River. This expansion signifies Viking's commitment to introducing travelers to exceptional and remarkable destinations while ensuring that they experience the finest the world has to offer through its award-winning fleet.
