SHERIDAN, Colo. — A tragic turn of events has left pet owners devastated after a litter of puppies, exposed to a rabies-positive dog during an adoption event, are being ordered to be euthanized. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has reached out to the foster families of the 11 puppies, informing them of the need to surrender their pets for euthanasia following the confirmation of rabies in one of the puppies. Aron Jones, director of MAMCO, expressed sorrow over the situation, highlighting the initial health and happiness of the puppies when they arrived from Texas. Dr. Herlihy from CDPHE extended sympathies to the foster families, acknowledging the emotional toll this decision has taken on those who had grown attached to the puppies. The situation has raised concerns about the protocols in place for rabies exposure, as families had hoped to quarantine their pets instead of facing euthanasia. Eden and Bryk, two of the affected puppy owners, voiced their frustration over the lack of options for quarantine, even consulting a lawyer to explore alternatives. Jones emphasized the importance of public health safety, noting that the state is taking extra precautions due to the potential exposure of the puppies in Texas prior to their arrival in Colorado. Despite their appreciation for MAMCO's support, Eden and Bryk were left heartbroken as they had to say goodbye to their beloved puppy, reflecting on the bond they had formed and their determination to protect him.
