Isaac French and his family undertook the ambitious restoration of the decaying railcar, which had been in disrepair for years. Their efforts, completed in just five months during 2020, have turned the once-rotting relic into a profitable Airbnb, generating up to $350 a night. French noted that the project paid for itself within 18 months, showcasing the potential of unique accommodations in remote areas. Originally built in 1906, the train car served multiple purposes, including mail, cargo, and passenger transport, making it a rare find in the world of locomotion. French emphasized the significance of the restoration, stating, “Most people probably wouldn’t have known this, but that means that it was used for three different purposes.” The family’s dedication to reviving the railcar has not only preserved a piece of history but also revitalized the local community. The project has attracted visitors from around the globe, with French expressing pride in contributing to the town's resurgence. He remarked, “It’s been so much fun to help breathe life back into the town,” highlighting the importance of the unique experience offered to those who make the journey to Deary. The restoration has also gained recognition, being featured on Magnolia Network’s “Restoration Road,” further enhancing its appeal. French aims to keep the experience affordable, ensuring that the charm of Deary and its historic train car remains accessible to all.
