PARIS (AP) — Melvyn Jaminet, the fullback for the French national rugby team, has been handed a 34-week suspension by the French Rugby Federation (FFR) following the posting of a racist video on social media. In addition to the suspension, Jaminet has been fined 30,000 euros (approximately $32,500). The incident occurred on July 7, shortly after Jaminet contributed to France's victory over Argentina in Mendoza, when he shared a video expressing a desire to harm individuals of Arab descent. The FFR's disciplinary hearing concluded that Jaminet's actions were detrimental to the integrity of rugby, leading to his immediate suspension from the national team and his return home. The lengthy suspension will keep him off the field until late March, causing him to miss a significant portion of the club season, the upcoming November internationals, and the 2025 Six Nations tournament. However, there is a possibility for a reduction of the suspension by eight weeks if Jaminet agrees to participate in community service initiatives organized by the FFR. This could involve engaging with youth players to discuss the risks associated with alcohol and social media, as well as advocating against discrimination. In addition to the FFR's ruling, Jaminet faced a separate disciplinary hearing with his club, Toulon, which has yet to announce its decision regarding any further sanctions.
