On a Friday in Akron, Ohio, the Hope and Healing Survivor Resource Center celebrated its 50th anniversary by honoring three women for their courageous actions in rescuing a sexual assault survivor. In August, a 33-year-old woman was attacked at a trailhead in Cascade Valley Metro Park when a stranger grabbed her from behind. The victim managed to use the SOS feature on her phone while struggling with her assailant, prompting the three women to respond to her cries for help. Among the rescuers was 65-year-old Donna McFadden, a grandmother and former U.S. Marine, who struck the attacker with a rock to help free the victim. The other two women joined in the effort, showcasing remarkable bravery in a dangerous situation. The assailant, identified as 32-year-old Issac Armour, is now facing multiple felony charges, including attempted rape and kidnapping, and is being held on a $500,000 bond. During the award ceremony, McFadden emphasized that anyone, regardless of their life stage, can make a difference. This sentiment was echoed by Teresa Stafford, CEO of the Hope and Healing Survivor Resource Center, who highlighted the importance of empathy and taking action when witnessing someone in distress. The organization aims to inspire community members to intervene in similar situations, reinforcing the message that collective action can lead to positive outcomes. The recognition of these women serves as a powerful reminder of the impact individuals can have in emergencies. Their bravery not only saved a life but also encourages others to act when they see someone in need, fostering a culture of support and vigilance in the community.
