India is set to host an important two-day international conference on R&D governance organized by the National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (NIScPR) on January 14th and 15th, 2025. This event is not only significant in terms of the commemoration of NIScPR’s 4th Foundation Day but also aims to address pressing issues related to research and development, fostering dialogue among key stakeholders in the field. The conference is expected to draw approximately 300 participants, including eminent scientists, policymakers, and young researchers from both domestic and international arenas. A central focus of the discussions will be on developing robust methods for performance evaluation of R&D programs and enhancing the connection between scientific efforts and societal needs. The gathering will feature distinguished keynote lectures, panel discussions, and technical sessions aimed at generating innovative practices. Among the notable speakers at the event will be Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, President of the Indian National Science Academy, delivering the Chief Guest address, and Prof. Sachin Chaturvedi, who will present the Foundation Day Lecture. In attendance will be experts from esteemed institutions and government bodies such as NITI Aayog, and contributions from international guests from several countries, including France, Russia, South Korea, and Brazil, who will share their insights on effective R&D governance practices. Furthermore, alongside discussions on the importance of open science and evaluation of R&D performance, the conference will also consider the social impacts of science and technology, particularly how to leverage social media in extending outreach and enhancing the evaluation frameworks for ongoing projects. New initiatives such as PM One-Nation-One-Subscription will also be part of the conversations, culminating in actionable policy suggestions aimed at improving R&D governance. The outcomes of the conference are anticipated to be significant for shaping future research and innovation strategies in India and beyond. To further its mission, the NIScPR aims to publish the conference results, including a special journal issue and policy bulletins, which will contribute to the broader body of knowledge regarding the governance and impact of R&D initiatives. As R&D continues to play a vital role in addressing developmental challenges, the insights gained from this conference are expected to be instrumental in informing future policy and fostering collaboration among different sectors of society.
