Aligning Infrastructure With Sustainable Development Goals

On August 23, a panel discussion was held at the Taj Mahal Palace & Hotel in Colaba, focusing on the alignment of infrastructure development with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Manuj Jindal, joint managing director of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, emphasized the need for infrastructure to connect people and stimulate local economies, rather than just focusing on GDP growth. He highlighted plans for a net zero carbon emission highway, which includes planting 33 lakh shrubs and creating wildlife passages. Prabodh Acharya from the JSW Group discussed the importance of balancing infrastructure growth with sustainability, advocating for equitable access to quality of life. He noted that their cement has the lowest carbon footprint globally, which supports sustainable infrastructure development. Acharya stressed the necessity of financial viability in sustainable solutions. Dr. Anantharaman Subramaniyan from Siemens Limited pointed out the role of digital technologies in addressing climate challenges, emphasizing that sustainability is a collective responsibility that extends beyond government and infrastructure companies. He mentioned scalable solutions like chiller plant optimization software as examples of how technology can aid in reducing emissions. Alok Shrivastava from Shapoorji Pallonji and Company highlighted the importance of leadership in promoting safety and environmental consciousness at construction sites. He noted initiatives such as solar-powered lighting and bio-toilets in labor camps, reinforcing the commitment to worker safety and resource conservation while pursuing growth.
