In the United States, retail giant Walmart is taking significant steps to expand its fuel station business in 2025. The company announced that it will be debuting or revamping more than 45 fuel and convenience stations this year. This expansion will increase Walmart’s total number of gas stations in the U.S. to over 450, enhancing its ability to provide a convenient shopping experience for customers. Currently, Walmart operates more than 400 fuel and convenience stations across the country and aims to have them in 34 different states once the new sites are operational. This initiative has been articulated by Walmart U.S. Vice President of Fuel and Convenience, Dave DeSerio, who emphasized the importance of meeting customer needs for low prices and convenience. He noted that fuel stations are an integral part of Walmart’s value proposition and that the latest expansion is a direct response to customer demand for more accessibility and efficiency in shopping. The company views the expansion of fuel stations not only as a way to increase business but also to enhance the overall customer experience. In a parallel development, Sam's Club, owned by Walmart, has extended the gas station hours at 90% of its clubs that offer fuel services. Most of these clubs have started opening their fuel stations at 6 a.m. and have adjusted their closing times to provide longer access to fuel. This move was confirmed by a spokesperson from Sam’s Club, showcasing the retailer's effort to adapt to the changing needs of its customers. Interestingly, Walmart's competitor, Costco, has also recognized the value of extending gas station hours this year. During its second quarter earnings call, Costco announced that its gas station operating hours would be extended, thus aligning its services more closely with customer expectations. The company has reported that many of its stations will remain open an hour later than in previous times, with some also starting earlier. These changes were part of Costco’s strategy to make its services more convenient, following feedback from its members. As the retail landscape continues to adapt to customer preferences, these expansions and adjustments reflect a broader trend aimed at improving service accessibility and customer satisfaction. Both Walmart and Costco are taking strategic steps to position themselves competitively in the fuel retail space, ensuring they respond to market demands effectively.
