- The initiative aims to ensure smooth participation from global delegations during the upcoming Games.
In light of recent immigration changes in the United States, organizers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics addressed concerns from International Olympic Committee members regarding visa and entry requirements for athletes and officials. During a session held in Pylos, Greece, the LA 2028 Games chairman Casey Wasserman responded to inquiries about the implications of current US immigration policies, which have tightened access for foreign travelers. Wasserman emphasized that despite the shift in immigration policy under President Donald Trump since his inauguration, previous commitments for full access to the Games have been reiterated by different administrations throughout the bid process. He stated that previous presidents had shown understanding of the requirements needed to successfully host the Games in a timely manner and provide adequate access for delegations from around the world. Furthermore, Wasserman referenced the accelerated visa program developed by the Biden administration specifically for athletes, which aims to simplify the application process. The IOC has conveyed confidence in receiving ongoing support from President Trump, who was instrumental in the initial decision to award the Games to Los Angeles in 2017. Organizers confirmed that they would establish a dedicated desk at the State Department for managing visa-related issues leading up to the event, ensuring that all participating nations could send their athletes and officials seamlessly. This proactive approach highlights the LA 2028 organizing committee’s commitment to facilitating participation in the Games while addressing the ongoing concerns brought up by the IOC regarding visas and international participation.
