During a phone call made from Scotland, the King expressed his encouragement by the community spirit that has emerged in response to the aggression, highlighting the resilience of the many against the actions of a few. The unrest, described as the worst civil disorder in over a decade, began after a tragic stabbing incident on July 29 in Southport, England, which resulted in the deaths of three children and injuries to eight others. This incident sparked protests linked to the far-right English Defense League, which escalated into riots targeting mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers. The violence has exposed significant racial divisions within the country. In response to the escalating tensions, large counter-demonstrations organized by anti-racist groups took place across various British cities, alongside an increased police presence. These efforts appear to have calmed the situation, although authorities remain vigilant for potential flare-ups. As of Friday, over 100 police officers have sustained injuries, with more than 600 arrests made and over 150 individuals charged in connection with the unrest.
