Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Maryland, has come under scrutiny for improperly claiming tax deductions on properties in Washington, D.C., and Maryland. A review of property records revealed that she took advantage of tax breaks intended for low-income senior citizens and primary residences, saving nearly $14,000 in taxes from 2005 to 2017. Despite claiming these exemptions, she did not qualify as the properties were not her primary residences. Alsobrooks's senior adviser stated that she was unaware of the tax issues and that her legal team is currently working with local authorities to rectify the situation. The adviser also noted that after her grandmother moved out of the Washington property, Alsobrooks continued to pay the mortgage until the property was sold in 2018. In 2008, she applied for a homestead exemption for a townhouse in Prince George's County, which she listed as her primary residence on her mortgage. However, the homestead tax credit from her previous home was not transferred, resulting in her paying more taxes than necessary. Despite this, her campaign claims that she is working to repay any credits received improperly. The controversy comes as Alsobrooks faces Republican Larry Hogan in a competitive Senate race, which is critical for the Democratic Party's efforts to maintain control of the Senate. Alsobrooks has had a notable career, being the first woman elected as state’s attorney in Prince George’s County and later as the first woman county executive. Despite the challenges posed by the tax allegations, she won her primary election by a significant margin, positioning herself as a strong candidate in the upcoming general election.
