Pune Collector Advocates Voter Awareness for Upcoming Elections

In Pune district, India, the last Lok Sabha elections witnessed a notable rise in voter registration and turnout, largely credited to effective voter awareness campaigns. Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase highlighted the need for ongoing initiatives to maintain and enhance these positive trends, particularly in urban constituencies where voter engagement is crucial. He emphasized the importance of targeting cooperative housing societies to ensure that residents are informed and motivated to participate in the electoral process. Dr. Diwase reported that the district's voter registration efforts have successfully increased the total number of voters to 8,647,000. He noted that polling stations have been strategically established in large housing societies to accommodate voters efficiently, with each station designed to serve around 1,200 individuals to minimize waiting times. The 'Know Your Polling Station' initiative, which was implemented during the Lok Sabha elections, is set to be expanded to further assist voters in locating their polling places. To address low turnout in certain constituencies, Dr. Diwase proposed collaborative efforts with local authorities and housing societies to raise awareness and encourage voter participation. He also suggested enhancing support for senior voters, including arranging wheelchairs and establishing polling stations in old age homes. Meetings with industrial establishments are planned to motivate workers to exercise their voting rights. Overall, the focus remains on sustaining the momentum gained from previous elections and ensuring that all eligible voters are informed and prepared to participate in the upcoming assembly elections.
