The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting an investigation into a natural gas explosion that occurred at a residence in Bel Air, Maryland, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. State officials have confirmed the identities of the victims, while the state fire marshal's office has indicated that the investigation is focusing on accidental causes, as there is no evidence of criminal activity. NTSB spokesperson Jennifer Gabris confirmed that investigators were on-site Monday, approximately 30 miles northeast of Baltimore. Following the explosion, which was reported around 6:40 a.m. on Sunday, firefighters were initially called to the area due to reports of a gas leak. As they approached, they received multiple calls indicating that the house had exploded. Two utility workers were present in the vicinity to address an electrical issue at the time of the incident. A neighboring resident sustained injuries and was treated at the scene. The state fire marshal's office reported that deputy marshals and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have completed their on-scene investigation and have now handed the site over to insurance representatives. Cleanup efforts are underway, with restoration companies beginning repairs on nearby homes. Investigators will analyze evidence collected, including gas and electrical piping, interviews, and video surveillance. Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray expressed condolences for the victims and emphasized the commitment of investigators to uncover the cause of the explosion to enhance community safety. Over 60 first responders from various agencies were deployed to the scene to assist in the emergency response.
