Driver arrested after dangerous high-speed chase ends in crash

In the United States, specifically Chicago, a high-speed chase unfolded on Thursday afternoon, drawing the attention of multiple police agencies. The pursuit began on the Eisenhower Expressway when Oak Brook officers attempted to pull over Ebonie Collins, 27, who was driving a stolen black Hyundai Sonata. Collins was wanted for prior incidents of fleeing and eluding law enforcement, leading to an extensive pursuit that escalated as she disregarded traffic laws, crashing into several vehicles on her way down both the Eisenhower and Dan Ryan expressways. As the chase progressed, Collins displayed reckless behavior, weaving in and out of traffic with her hazard lights flashing, and utilizing emergency lanes to evade capture. Despite officers' initial attempts to arrest Collins when they drew their weapons, she managed to escape onto the Dan Ryan Expressway. The police maintained surveillance through modern technology, including license plate readers and a helicopter, which ultimately aided in tracking her movements. Collins’ dangerous journey came to a halt after she crashed into a semi-trailer truck at the Garfield Boulevard exit on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Upon exiting the vehicle, she attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by the police. Multiple damages to other vehicles occurred during her reckless drive, and police are currently evaluating whether additional charges will be filed against her for these incidents. At the time of her arrest, Collins was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, along with other traffic violations such as operating an uninsured vehicle and speeding excessively. Notably, Collins has a criminal history which includes a misdemeanor burglary charge from 2019 and a robbery conviction in 2017. Authorities praised the effective use of technology in police work, highlighting how the presence of license plate readers and aerial surveillance prevented a potentially more dangerous pursuit.
