Skopje Focuses on Cultural Heritage Restoration with EU Support

Skopje's cultural heritage preservation took center stage during a recent meeting between Macedonian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski and EU Ambassador David Geer. The discussion highlighted the urgent need to restore the central building of the “Post of North Macedonia,” recognized for its cultural and architectural significance. Representatives from the Ministry of Culture also participated, emphasizing the importance of EU collaboration in the reconstruction efforts. Nikoloski expressed concern over the neglect of cultural heritage, noting that many significant buildings remain unprotected. He stated, “We will not tolerate that,” underscoring the commitment to restore the central Post office, which holds substantial historical value in Macedonia. The meeting aimed to strategize on how to safeguard this important structure, which is emblematic of the brutalist architectural movement. The restoration project is expected to be challenging and costly, requiring considerable energy, time, and expertise. Nikoloski acknowledged that while the endeavor will not be easy, it is essential to protect the building in its original form and return it to functional use. He reiterated the building's importance, calling it “one of the most significant buildings” in Macedonia's architectural history.
