Kolkata Protests Intensify Over Doctor's Death as CBI Probe Looms
- Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari seeks CBI probe into RG Kar Incident.
- Hearing scheduled in Calcutta High Court on Tuesday regarding the incident.
- Mamata Banerjee urges swift police action in response to the situation.
In a significant development following the tragic death of a doctor, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that the case will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the state police fails to make progress by Sunday. Banerjee emphasized the urgency of the situation, recalling that similar cases, including the Rizwanur case, were previously under CBI jurisdiction. The announcement comes amid rising tensions and protests from medical students and faculty. The resignation of Sandip Ghosh, Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has further fueled unrest. Despite being reassigned to the National Medical College by the state government, students at RG Kar have locked the main gate to prevent Ghosh from entering. Protests have also spread to the national capital, with demonstrations occurring near AIIMS and RML Hospital, where students are demanding justice for the deceased doctor and proper punishment for the accused. Reports indicate that the victim suffered injuries consistent with a violent struggle, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding her death. Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari has filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court seeking a CBI investigation, with a hearing scheduled for Tuesday. In response to the RG Kar incident, various groups are planning demonstrations across the state, including a rally on Independence Day, highlighting the widespread demand for accountability and justice.
