Vacaville city officials have issued a public safety alert following a confirmed sighting of a mountain lion in the downtown area. The incident, captured on a resident's home surveillance camera, occurred early on August 17, showing the animal roaming between West and Cernon Streets near Main Street. The Vacaville Police Department reported that the mountain lion was seen walking along a fence in a parking lot before disappearing from view. In light of this sighting, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and take precautions if they encounter the animal or other large wildlife. Residents are advised to keep pets and children indoors, secure food sources, and avoid walking pets off-leash. If a mountain lion is spotted, individuals should pick up small children without bending over, back away slowly, and make noise to give the animal an escape route, while refraining from running or confronting the animal. The Vacaville Police Department encourages anyone who sees a mountain lion to report it immediately by calling 707–499–5200 or contacting the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Although attacks on humans are rare, wildlife officials remind the public that such incidents have occurred in California, including a recent attack in March that resulted in a fatality. For further inquiries, residents can reach Lieutenant Chris Lechuga of the Vacaville Police Department at 707-449-5269 or via email.
