PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have demoted outfielder Alek Thomas to Triple-A in an effort to help him regain the batting prowess that made him a standout during last year's postseason. The 24-year-old, who began the season as the team's starting center fielder, has struggled since returning from a left hamstring strain that sidelined him for nearly three months. With a batting average of just .191, three home runs, and 17 RBIs since his return, Thomas has seen his playing time diminish, particularly with Jake McCarthy emerging as one of the league's top hitters. In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks recalled infielder Blaze Alexander to fill Thomas' roster spot. This decision comes as the team seeks additional infield depth while All-Star Ketel Marte recovers from a sprained ankle. Alexander, who had a productive first half of the season with a .259 batting average, three home runs, and 21 RBIs, started at second base against the Rockies on Wednesday. Thomas was instrumental in the Diamondbacks' successful run to the World Series last October, notably hitting a crucial two-run homer in Game 4 of the NL Championship Series, which helped propel the team past the Phillies. As of Wednesday, the Diamondbacks are riding a wave of momentum, having won five consecutive games and 17 out of their last 20, underscoring the team's strong performance despite the challenges faced by Thomas.
