- Excitement builds as Moss steps into his new role at USC.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Miller Moss has officially been named the starting quarterback for the No. 23 Southern California Trojans, stepping into the role previously held by 2022 Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, who is now with the Chicago Bears. Moss, a redshirt junior from Los Angeles, secured the position after a competitive training camp against UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava. His standout performance in the Holiday Bowl solidified his status as the frontrunner. In the Holiday Bowl, Moss showcased his skills by throwing for 372 yards and setting a Pac-12 bowl record with six touchdown passes, earning offensive MVP honors in a 42-28 victory over Louisville. With Williams opting to focus on the NFL draft, Moss seized the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities on the field. He has been part of USC’s program since the 2021 recruiting class, remaining committed despite the arrival of highly regarded quarterback Jaxson Dart. Under the coaching of Lincoln Riley, who took over after Clay Helton, Moss has served as a backup for the past two seasons. Throughout his career, he has accumulated 914 passing yards and nine touchdowns against just one interception in 12 games. At 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Moss is expected to fit into Riley’s spread offense, which has typically favored more mobile quarterbacks. The Trojans are set to kick off their season against No. 13 LSU in Las Vegas on September 1, marking a new chapter for Moss as he takes the helm of the USC offense.
