Belgium Coalition Talks Progressing Slowly

Coalition talks in Belgium, led by Bart De Wever, are currently facing challenges as discussions on key issues continue past the initial deadline of September 23, ahead of the elections scheduled for October 13. De Wever resumed his role as formator on September 2, expressing concerns about the slow pace of negotiations. The coalition groups involved include N-VA, CD&V, Vooruit, MR, and Les Engagés, who are actively engaging in discussions to address critical topics such as health, energy, security, defense, transportation, and immigration. Experts and representatives from each party have formed teams to tackle these issues collaboratively. However, the asylum and migration group is struggling to reach consensus, which has proven to be more difficult than for other groups. When agreements are reached, they are resolved within the teams, while unresolved matters are escalated to the main group for further deliberation. To maintain coordination and address emerging issues, the leaders convene every Friday. The next scheduled meeting will take place in Antwerp, chosen for its significance as a major city with suitable facilities, underscoring the importance of effective communication among the leaders.
