Network Rail's recent announcement to keep the Sandy Lane level crossing open has generated a blend of relief and concern among local politicians in Oxfordshire. Green councillor Ian Middleton expressed apprehension about the uncertainty this decision brings to the area, while Liberal Democrat Dorothy Walker praised the decision, highlighting the crossing's importance for connectivity between Kidlington and Yarnton. The Sandy Lane crossing serves as a crucial link between two major northbound routes, the A44 and A4260, and is vital for local businesses and residents. Network Rail cited a lack of anticipated growth in freight train usage, attributed to ongoing economic challenges post-pandemic, as the reason for deferring the closure. The authority urged the public to adhere to safety signage while using the crossing, emphasizing the need for caution. Councillor Middleton criticized Network Rail for deprioritizing the closure in favor of other projects, such as the Oxford Station upgrade, leaving the community in a state of uncertainty regarding future developments. Conversely, Walker noted that the decision is a relief for residents and businesses, referencing a 2021 petition against the closure that garnered 2,000 signatures.
