Story

In Ottawa, Ontario, a new initiative aimed at enhancing digital access has been launched, providing free community Wi-Fi to residents of two Ottawa Community Housing buildings located at 251 and 255 Donald Street in the neighborhood of Vanier. This pilot project, known as CommuniFi, was announced on December 12, 2024, and is managed by National Capital FreeNet in collaboration with Ottawa Community Housing, Hiboo Networks, and with support from the Canadian Internet Registration Authority. The introduction of free Wi-Fi in these common areas is a significant step toward bridging the digital divide experienced by many low-income tenants in the community. The CommuniFi project addresses the financial burden associated with internet connectivity for tenants who often struggle with the costs of technology and online access. Providing free Wi-Fi facilitates not only social engagement but also educational opportunities. The initiative transforms common areas into spaces where tenants can gather to engage in vital support programs, participate in social activities, and attend community events organized by local partners. This aspect of the program highlights the role of digital connectivity in fostering community ties and providing essential services to residents. Recognizing the need for adequate digital skills among tenants, National Capital FreeNet is committed to offering tailored workshops and information sessions through their HelpDesk service. These workshops aim to equip tenants with the necessary skills to effectively utilize the free Wi-Fi, ensuring that they can confidently navigate the digital landscape. The workshops will cover various topics, including online safety, digital literacy, and how to access essential online services, such as health information, employment resources, and financial assistance programs. The initiative received funding from CIRA’s Net Good Grants program, which supports projects that enhance the internet experience for Canadians. Charles Noir, Vice-President of Community Investment, Policy, and Advocacy at CIRA, expressed pride in seeing such initiatives flourish as they contribute to a digital environment where all Canadians can thrive. Ottawa Community Housing's involvement underscores its mission to expand digital access and provide essential resources to vulnerable populations. By ensuring that the community has access to free Wi-Fi, OCH reaffirms its commitment to supporting tenants' needs, enabling them to access vital services, socialize, and participate actively in their communities.
