A Sterling Heights man, Scott VanLuven, is being celebrated for his quick actions in apprehending a suspect accused of attempting to kidnap two young girls on Tuesday. VanLuven witnessed the 23-year-old suspect's vehicle strike a young boy before allegedly trying to abduct the boy's 7-year-old cousin. "Everything just happened so fast, and I just wanted to make sure that gentleman didn't go nowhere," VanLuven recounted, explaining how he held the suspect against the vehicle until police arrived. The suspect faces serious charges, including kidnapping and reckless driving related to the incident in Sterling Heights. Additionally, he is linked to an earlier attempted kidnapping of a 15-year-old girl in nearby Clinton Township. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect will be arraigned on Thursday, as the community remains on high alert following these alarming events. Sterling Heights Police Chief Dale Dwojakowski expressed concern over the potential consequences had the suspect escaped with the young girl. "I can only imagine what would've happened if he would've gotten away from that scene," he stated, highlighting the gravity of the situation. While many residents are calling VanLuven a hero, he humbly insists he was simply in the right place at the right time. "All heroes say that," remarked local resident Nate Moe, reinforcing the sentiment that true heroism often goes unrecognized. The young boy involved in the incident suffered minor injuries but is expected to recover fully.
