Israel is enhancing its naval capabilities amid increasing threats from Iran and affiliated non-state groups, particularly Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthi rebels. In May 2015, Israel ordered four Sa'ar-6 corvettes, which were built by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in Germany, with construction beginning in 2018. These ships were delivered between December 2020 and July 2021, partially funded by a German government subsidy. The corvettes are tailored to Israel's operational needs, providing advanced defense mechanisms and ensuring the protection of its vital energy assets. These Sa'ar-6 corvettes are heavily armed for their size, featuring advanced systems such as 32 Vertical Launch Cells that can utilize Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles. These missiles are designed for multiple target engagements at long ranges and have proven effective in combat scenarios, providing Israel with enhanced air defense and anti-drone capabilities. Additionally, the corvettes include torpedo launchers for anti-submarine warfare and are equipped with a hangar for medium-class helicopters, which significantly boosts their operational versatility. The establishment of the Sa'ar-6 class also aims to safeguard Israel’s offshore gas fields, which form a crucial part of the country's economy, supplying over 60% of its electricity and supporting exports to neighboring countries. The corvettes have already demonstrated their effectiveness in countering terrorist groups, specifically noted during their deployment against Hamas and the recent Houthi missile threats aimed at Eilat in December 2023. Despite their advanced capabilities and contributions to Israel's naval power, there are still persistent challenges from regional threats. The addition of the Sa'ar-6 class to the fleet represents a strategic advancement for the Israeli Navy but also highlights the continuous nature of military hurdles. The Israeli military remains aware that while these corvettes enhance their maritime defense, achieving absolute dominance in the region is an ongoing struggle, indicating that the complexities of regional security are far from resolved.
