Story

Newquay, located in north Cornwall, continues to be recognized as the UK's "Surf Capital," according to a recent study that evaluated various coastal locations based on factors such as water quality, sea temperatures, and accessibility. The study also spotlighted several other notable surfing spots, with Thurlestone Beach in south Devon ranking second, followed by Barmouth and Aberystwyth's North Beach, which secured third place. Rhosneigr on Anglesey's west coast also made the list, coming in eighth. The study revealed that Aberystwyth's North Beach is particularly appealing for novice surfers, although its wave quality is contingent on favorable weather conditions. Interestingly, while Aberystwyth garnered more online interest than Barmouth from June 2023 to May 2024, it still lagged behind Perranporth in terms of Google searches. This highlights the competitive nature of surfing destinations in the region. In a related finding, Borth in Ceredigion emerged as the top location for kayaking, attributed to its picturesque views of Cardigan Bay and a more relaxed atmosphere. Despite its ideal kayaking conditions and free parking, Borth has seen limited online interest as a kayaking destination, indicating a potential area for growth in tourism. Additionally, the Mawddach Estuary has been recognized as one of the UK's premier paddleboarding locations, celebrated for its tranquil waters and stunning mountain backdrop. The area has also seen the reopening of indoor facilities at a former adventure park, now functioning as a climbing center operated by Zip World, further enhancing its appeal to outdoor enthusiasts.
