Asteroid 2024 PT5 leaves Earth after two-month stay
- The 10-meter-wide asteroid 2024 PT5 was detected on August 7, 2024.
- It orbited Earth safely from September 29 to November 25, 2024.
- The asteroid's journey suggests it could return in 2055 but will not be captured again.
In a significant astronomical event, an asteroid known as 2024 PT5, measuring approximately 10 meters in width, has completed its two-month orbit around Earth and drifted back into the Solar System. Detected by scientists on August 7, 2024, the asteroid was tracked using the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System, which identifies near-Earth objects. Having maintained a safe distance of about 1.1 million miles from Earth, scientists have suggested that 2024 PT5 might be a fragment from the Moon, ejected due to ancient asteroid impacts. The object is expected to make a return to Earth's vicinity in 2055, although it will not be captured into orbit again. Such temporary captures are rare events in the field of astronomy.
