Ovo launches £50m support for energy bills amid winter challenges

Ovo Energy has introduced a £50 million support scheme to assist customers with energy bills during the winter months, following the Government's decision to cut winter fuel payments for many pensioners. This funding will provide direct financial aid, temporary reductions in direct debit payments, and home upgrades such as insulation and new boilers. The initiative is a response to the Government's means-testing of winter fuel payments, which will affect around 10 million people, leaving many vulnerable customers without support. Chief executive David Buttress emphasized the company's responsibility to help customers navigate the winter challenges, stating that the support scheme is the largest yet. Ovo previously offered similar support packages in 2022 and 2023, reflecting a growing need for assistance amid rising energy costs. The new scheme will be available starting October 1, with eligibility checks accessible on Ovo's website. Critics of the Government's cuts argue that the means-testing approach fails to address the needs of many who do not qualify for pension credit but still struggle financially. The Government defends its decision as necessary to address public finance issues, but this has led to significant backlash from various stakeholders, including Labour MPs. Buttress also called for a long-term solution in the form of a social tariff, which would provide targeted discounts for low-income customers. This proposal aims to create a more equitable energy system, ensuring that no one is left behind as energy costs continue to rise.
