Story

The family of D’Vontaye Mitchell, who tragically died on June 30 after being restrained by four hotel employees outside a Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee, has reached a settlement with the hotel. Family attorneys Ben Crump, Will Sulton, and B’Ivory Lamarr announced on Monday that they engaged in “good faith conversations” with Hyatt to resolve the matter amicably. The terms of the settlement remain confidential, and both parties expressed satisfaction in avoiding a court trial. This settlement announcement coincides with a Milwaukee court's decision to deny motions to dismiss felony murder charges against the four hotel workers involved in Mitchell's death. During a preliminary hearing, the defense argued there was insufficient probable cause for the charges, but Milwaukee County Court Commissioner Rosa Barillas ruled that the state had met its burden of proof, ordering the defendants to stand trial. The four individuals charged include security guard Todd Alan Erickson, front desk agent Devin W. Johnson-Carson, bellman Herbert T. Williamson, and off-duty security guard Brandon Ladaniel Turner. They have not yet entered pleas and are scheduled for arraignment on Thursday. The Milwaukee District Attorney's Office filed felony murder charges on August 6, citing a thorough review of evidence, including an autopsy that classified Mitchell's death as a homicide due to restraint asphyxia and the effects of drugs. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting issues of accountability and safety in hospitality settings.
