Online retail giant Amazon has inaugurated a new fulfilment centre in Leeds, marking a significant investment of £500 million. This state-of-the-art facility, located at Gateway45, spans three floors and employs advanced technology to enhance the efficiency of picking, packing, and shipping customer orders. The company is actively recruiting for a variety of positions, including engineers, HR and IT professionals, as well as roles in health and safety, finance, and logistics. This new centre is Amazon's 31st in the UK and is strategically positioned less than 10 miles from its existing Wakefield centre, which commenced operations in October 2022. Richard Thompson, Amazon’s regional director, emphasized the importance of West Yorkshire to the company, noting that over 3,800 small and medium-sized enterprises operate as selling partners in the region. The new facility will increase Amazon's workforce in West Yorkshire to over 4,000 full and part-time roles. James Mason, chief executive of the West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, hailed the investment as a testament to the region's strategic significance in the logistics sector and the skillset of its workforce. He expressed optimism about the economic boost that the job creation will bring to the area. Mandy Ridyard, business adviser to the Mayor of West Yorkshire, echoed these sentiments, describing Amazon's investment as a strong vote of confidence in the region. She highlighted the potential for economic growth and the creation of thousands of new jobs, reinforcing the commitment to building a prosperous West Yorkshire.
