Mansfield launches green makeover to reduce flood risks

In Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, a significant initiative is underway to combat flooding caused by urban development. Severn Trent is investing £76 million over three years to implement 340 sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) across the town. These systems aim to manage surface water runoff effectively, addressing the increased flood risk due to hard surfaces like tarmac and paving. The project will create four hectares of green space that serve dual purposes: flood management and enhancing biodiversity. The sustainable drainage systems include the construction of large drainage basins, permeable paving, and rain gardens designed to capture and infiltrate rainwater back into the ground. For instance, bio swales have been integrated into previously paved areas, allowing them to hold substantial amounts of stormwater. Local residents have reported positive changes, noting a reduction in surface water issues and an improvement in the aesthetic appeal of their surroundings.
