Gas prices surge by over 5 percent for consumers in Pakistan
- Ogra announced a rise in RLNG prices in Pakistan effective April 2025.
- The increase affects both SNGPL and SSGCL consumers, with varying percentages for transmission and distribution stages.
- The price hikes have been attributed to changes in market conditions, despite improvements in system losses.
In Pakistan, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) announced a significant increase in the sale price of Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) for April 2025. This increase came despite a notable decrease in system losses for the two primary Sui gas companies, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL). The updated prices reflect a 4.9 percent upward adjustment for SNGPL consumers, who reside in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, bringing the transmission price to $12.59 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) and reflecting an increase of 4.08 percent at the distribution stage. For SSGCL, which serves Sindh and Balochistan, the transmission price rose by 5.44 percent to $11.27 per mmBtu, while the distribution price experienced a minor reduction of 1 percent to $12.59 per mmBtu. The overall shift in pricing can be traced back to an upsurge in RLNG delivered prices on ships, though the reduction in SSGCL's distribution price can be attributed to its decreased system losses.
