President Droupadi Murmu met with the Indian Olympic contingent on Wednesday at Rashtrapati Bhavan, celebrating their achievements at the recently concluded Paris Olympics 2024. The meeting, held at Ganatantra Mandap, highlighted the athletes' inspiring performances, with Murmu emphasizing their role as role models for the youth of India. The Indian team secured a total of six medals, including one silver and five bronze, continuing the nation's strong tradition in the global sporting arena. A total of 117 Indian athletes participated in the Paris Olympics, which took place from July 26 to August 11. Among the notable attendees at the meeting were shooter Manu Bhaker, who made history by becoming the first Indian athlete in the post-independence era to win two Olympic medals in a single edition, earning bronze in both the women's 10m air pistol and the mixed team event alongside Sarabjot Singh. The event also saw the presence of veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, captain Harmanpreet Singh, and members of the bronze-medal-winning men’s hockey team. Other distinguished athletes included wrestler Aman Sehrawat, who won bronze in the men’s 57kg freestyle, shooter Swapnil Kusale, and shuttler Lakshya Sen. Notably, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who finished fourth, was also in attendance, showcasing the diverse talent of the Indian contingent. India finished 71st in the overall medals tally at the Paris Olympics, marking a significant moment in the country's sporting history.
