Story

— In a tragic incident in Myanmar, two freelance journalists were killed during a raid by security forces in the southern state of Mon. Win Htut Oo, 26, and Htet Myat Thu, 28, were reportedly targeted as the military continues its crackdown on dissent following the February 2021 coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. The raid occurred at Htet Myat Thu's home in Letpya village, where approximately 30 security personnel stormed the premises while members of the Kyaikhto Revolution Force were visiting. According to Khin Yupar, head of the Democratic Voice of Burma's Citizen Journalist Network, both journalists were shot during the raid. Win Htut Oo was killed alongside a resistance member, while Htet Myat Thu and another guerrilla were reportedly executed after being captured. Khin Yupar condemned the violence, stating, “It is unacceptable that the junta’s forces attacked and shot journalists without examining and questioning them.” She emphasized the talent and dedication of Win Htut Oo, who had been actively reporting news from the region. A fellow journalist, speaking anonymously due to safety concerns, revealed that the raid took place shortly after three resistance members visited Htet Myat Thu. Reports indicate that the two journalists were tied up before being killed, while another resistance fighter managed to escape. The Kyaikhto Revolution Force confirmed the deaths of the journalists and their members in a statement on social media, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by media professionals in Myanmar.
